Here’s What You Should Know About Getting an Australian Shepherd

Has watching dog videos all day on social media platforms triggered your pet parent instincts? Imagine the wholesome feeling of seeing your dog pet and cuddle with you, it is inexplicable. If you’re looking for a highly trainable, smart, and fun-loving dog, the Australian shepherd might be the one for you!

The Australian shepherd, also known as an Aussie, is a super active, intelligent breed who loves to work. So no matter how many long hikes, runs, or trips to the dog park you take your Aussie on, they will always have the energy to engage in more activities. As exuberant and energetic Australian shepherds are, there are other traits that make them a popular choice among families and singles.

Before you bring home a furry companion, it is crucial to understand that different breeds have different needs. So here’s what you should know before getting an Australian shepherd.

What Kind of Breed is an Australian Shepherd?

Despite their name, these mottled puppies are pure American-bred pets, recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1991. Australian Shepherd, as we know them today, were first bred in California during the Gold Rush of the 1840s. It was during the early 1800s that several Basques brought their dogs east to Australia to crossbreed their dogs for ranch work.

So, where does the ‘Australian’ in the name come from? Some people believed that Basque shepherds came to California via Australia, hence “Australian Shepherd,” while others argued that the name comes from the fact that many sheep at the time the breed first emerged were brought over from Australia.

What is Their Temperament Like?

Being one of the most active dog breeds, Australian shepherds are typically outgoing and friendly. It is safe to say that these puppies thrive on human companionship and are the happiest when they are interacting with people, especially their family. It is as long as they are able to channel their pent-up energy through physical and mental stimulation, they are one of the most sweet and loving breeds.

Furthermore, like most herd dogs, Aussies can be very protective of their family. As friendly as they are, these dogs are often wary of strangers and can even become aggressive around people they don’t know.

Is it Challenging to Train an Australian Shepherd?

While Australian shepherds are very smart and relatively easy to train, it can be a challenge to take care of them in their adolescence, when they are between six months and two years old. As one of the sharpest and amiable breeds out there, you can train an Australian Shepherd to do just about anything you want them to do with positive reinforcement. You can start training your Aussie at an age as young as eight weeks, and if you put it off until later years, you have to deal with a stubborn dog. Not to mention, a lack of training can also aggravate their herding instincts which will only create havoc in your home.

Now that you have a fair idea of what is it is like to bring home an Aussie, all you need to do is make up your mind to welcome your furry friend. If you’re looking for Australian shepherd puppies for sale in New Jersey, get in touch with us today!
